Aaron Dilloway (ex-Wolf Eyes, ex-Couch, ex-Universal Indians and is the guy behind Hanson Records) is playing the basement of the Comet on May 6th for FREE (21+) with John Mannion (of Cathode Terror Secretion), Being (Harsh noise walls artist from Dayton), and Iovae (my favorite noise artist in Cincinnati). DJ Pete Fosco will be spinning between sets.

PINK FILM (New Cincinnati Power Electronics / Harsh Noise)

Emilie and Brad are friends of mine who make power electronics and harsh noise.  I've been catching their sets since their first show and have been really impressed with what they're doing.  The noise scene here has always been very strong and they're just the latest female/male noise project to come out of here.  Last night, I bought their first tape, Seppuku.  It's unusually good for a demo and the lyrics are taken from Jenny Holzer's "Inflammatory Essays" and Valerie Solanas' "S.C.U.M. Manifesto".  Emilie is very interested in Japanese culture (some of you probably caught the reference of the band name), which shows up in the tape's artwork and song titles.  There are a limited number of them left, so get ahold of one while you can.  Their website, where you can download a couple of live sets from, is here:

Opening Show At The New Record Store Downtown This Friday (5/7)

This is from Brandon of Paralyzer.  He posted about it on the Cincinnati DIY board.

There is a new record store opening up on Main St. by the folks who run Iris Book Cafe. I don't know the name yet, but I know they will be doing an opening show this Friday, May 7th. I apologize for not knowing all of the info about it, but I wanted to get the word out asap. Troy from the Bikehaus is setting this up. I apologize if a post has already been made. Below is what I know.

Classic (and Current) Cincinnati Punk Rock Radio Show

There's a) new classic (and current) Cincinnati punk rock radio show out called That Was Then, This is Now, Cincy. They bill themselves as "part of the local lunch block on wvqc. tapping into that nasty addiction we all have to remembering our youth with the excuse of relating it to our present."  It's run by Bree Blisters (email, twitter, ), who's been a part of the local punk scene for almost 15 years.

It's on Wednesdays at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm on  Radio Free Queen City (WVQC 95.7 FM), which is connected to Media Bridges (and, from what I understand, much better-run than WAIF...).  Check it out!!!

New Record Store Downtown (All Used Stuff!!!!!!!)

There's a new record store downtown, next to Iris Book Cafe, on Main Street.  It's owned by the same guy as Iris Book Cafe, who was the original owner of Kaldi's.  There's insanely cool records, mostly $5 and under (I got the soundtrack to Spaceballs for $4!!!!!!!!), cassettes, comics, DVD's, Videos (I think???), and some 8-tracks.  They're gonna be rotating their stock, too.

It's between 13th and 14th Streets.

Pusdrainer Gets Good Press From Decibel Magazine!!!

For those of you not aware, Decibel magazine is the most successful metal / hc / etc magazine out right now.  The have a short section that covers noise, p.e., etc and Justin was in it this month!!!

White Walls Demo Reviewed in Latest Maximum Rock'n Roll (#319 - December 2009)

WHITE WALLS - Five songs of harsh, dissonant hardcore along the lines of whatever you call the sound that's being cultivated by bands such as CULT RITUAL and TOTAL ABUSE, and though the layout does reek a bit of this band trying to be "cryptic" (based on the ambiguous artwork and stark layout), I otherwise don't get the impression WHITE WALLS is trying to pull some sort of "weird punk" hack job.  These songs don't follow a formula, have tempo changes that are unexpected without being awkward, and parts rarely repeat themselves twice. The vocals actually remind me of DOWN IN FLAMES of all things, though they're mildly muddled, as is the recording to a certain extent. The second side's single song has the singer babbling incoherently over a single note/chord dirge, with occasional B-side-of-My War informed changeups and feedback squalling over everything.

Check Out Iris Book Cafe Downtown

The guy who originally opened up Kaldi's (RIP), and later sold it, started a coffee shop/book store/art gallery, with wireless internet access (of course) and a beautiful courtyard.  It was mentioned in the New York Times recently, so you should probably check it out.  I went there today for the first time and liked it a lot, so much so that I ended up spending money that I shouldn't have.  They serve food and have a wide range of coffee, tea, etc.  The book selection is great; I actually found a hardcover book of Sufi poetry for only eight dollars.  Needless to say, I bought it.  There was  also a paperback containing Thoreau's Walden and Civil Disobedience that I grabbed for only a buck-fifty.  In addition to books, they have used CD's and vinyl for sale and DVD's to rent.  Their vinyl selection is pretty decent and includes some interesting spoken word (I purchased an LP of some guy reading Civil Disobedience for only five dollars).  Most of the records are around five dollars, although there are also some ridiculously rare (and very expensive) records, from an original copy of the Stooges' Fun House to a bunch of ancient Rolling Stone albums.  Those range anywhere from twenty to forty dollars, but I'm told that the owner is willing to negotiate on price...

If you miss Kaldi's (back when it was good...), want some Ugandan coffee, are looking for some good books and vinyl, or whatever, make sure to stop by.  The support of small businesses from our community is crucial to their survival and the more of them we have... the more things that there are to do here.  And yeah, this isn't Portland or Chicago (which your friends probably moved back from a few days ago...), but we have some cool stuff here that you aren't going to find elsewhere.  Plus it's centrally located (Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Dayton, Louisville, Lexington, Indianapolis, Cleveland, etc are all within a one-to-four hour drive) and has strong, supportive art and music scenes rich with talent.  Not to mention one of the best minor league hockey times EVER, strong college basketball and football teams, a football team that's played well over the past couple of years after fifteen years of no winning seasons, people aren't always in a rush to get somewhere and a crime rate lower than the majority of major cities (don't believe the hype about Clifton and Over-the-Rhine...).  Anyhow, hopefully I'll run into you sometime at Iris.  I'll probably be wearing my Mets cap or yarmulke (or both ;-).
